Sorry, Glenn.... the definition of power pop does not include that the band must only have 3 members. I mean, the technical generally agreed upon definition, of course, not your own personal.

The two greatest power pop band of all time, bar none, Big Star and Cheap Trick, both had 4 members.

        You could always argue....

        1. Buzzcocks
        2. Big Star
        3. Cheap Trick
        4. Badfinger
        5. Kinks

yeah Sal... it was hard for me to make my list beyond Big Star and Cheap Trick, as sad to say, other than those two, and Nick Lowe, I'm not sure exactly what qualifies and what doesn't? depends on who you ask

I nearly put the Sweet, but I've always thought of them as a glam/glitter band... though some may well consider them power pop or some sort of cross over-hybrid

the kinks... my fave band of all time, but i've never thought of them as a power pop band... more like 60s garage, at least in their early days

but I see how you could easily argue that the ARE a power pop band

semanitics, definitions... aaaaaaaaargh! its all just good music really *laughs*

and see, Cream... great band, but I'd call them Hard Rock, not power pop

what about The Yardbirds... or the Byrds for that matter? Buffalo Springfield

            ugh! labels are tough really

Okay, throw out the 3 member thing. I can think of a couple of good solo artists like Marshall Crenshaw and Dave Edmunds that should make somebody's list. And I think the Foos may have 4 members at some times (especially on tour).

dave edmunds! how could i forget? good one, glenn

so how do you feel about Big Star and Cheap Trick? i'd love to hear your thoughts

Big Star? Don't know. Haven't heard them. They're before my time. I'll have to do some research. Cheap Trick? Pretty much the same, but I have heard a little bit. I like it well enough.

well, seems to me the Police are a bit before your time too? Cheap Trick only predates the Police by about 2 years (they existed earlier, but i mean their popular stuff) and Big Star by about 5

and hey, both those bands are before my time too--and Sal's-- but ya know... good music is good music

and isn't Cream also before your time, WAY before your time... even more so than Trick or Big Star

*laughs* all I really mean is that, by the bands you've listed here, and elsewhere, you obviously have both wide and very good, taste... so maybe give these bands a try? well, more of a try with cheap trick...

and for sure, check out Big Star, since you haven't... my god! they are good... one of my top 10 bands of all time

Sal and I also have good, and varied, taste and we both listed both those bands.... so, maybe give them a day in court?

This labeling stuff sucks. I wanted to include the Beatles because they probably were the ultimate power-pop band. But I was always told that power-pop was everything post-Beatles! I do agree that the Kinks were more garage rock-n-roll, but their seventies output I think fits in quite nicely. Undertones are a good one! You could even say the Ramones!

agreed on EVERY point you've made here... for the purposes of this tribe, you sorta have to label, i guess... and sometimes its useful as a quick n handy reference/short hand

but overall...yeppers you are right once again, your contributions have proven invaluable

i'm loving your new avatar, by the way!

                              3.) Chicago
                              4.) War

lol randall EVERY ONE one of these, except chicago, is a funk, soul or RB group... pretty far off from power pop

and chicago is even further from power pop! schlock money pop, i'd say though they have a few top 40 hits I like

for power pop think: cheap trick, buzzcocks, the replacements, dave edmunds, nick lowe, big star and most of the bands people have listed here... well, other than the 80s hairband power ballads listed by DJsc...

as sal was saying, "definitions" sort of suck and are also intangible... i can't *quite* put my finger on or verbalize what makes a band "power pop" but there is a certain something that makes you go "yeah! now THAT'S power pop!"
i would love to start a thread of "power ballad greats" or "hair bands" or "70s soul/rb/funk" or even "schlock pop"

but loose defintions or no, and i like to keep them elastic, not one of these bands belongs on a "power pop" list though all would be very high on my 70s funk-soul-rb list! (excepting of course, chicago)

*note all these bands did have popular hits... so yes, they are pop (ular), by definition

but pop/top 40/radio hit and power pop are not the same thing...

many of the best Power Pop bands never had more than one hit song, and a low charting one at that... many had NO chart hits...

it's a style of music really, not following the dictionary/music industry definition of pop which is "charts high/sell big"
                                • don't get me started on chicago

                                  Mon, August 15, 2005 - 1:30 PM
                                  >and chicago is even further from power pop! schlock money pop, i'd say >though they have a few top 40 hits I like

chicago had a few loser songs but some brilliant moments as well.

CHICAGO TRANSIT AUTHORITY, CHICAGO III and CHICAGO VII have some nice moments where they aren't afraid to experiment. Lots of guitar feedback on the first album and some nice prog rock/jazz experiments on the seventh to name a few. After guitarist Terry Kath died in the late 70's is when Chicago started to suck.

I think since this tribe is not limited to music geeks there is a lot of deviation from the actual power pop genre in people's choices.

                                  and that's a good thing!

Looks like this thread has disappeared but what the hey.

    1. Badfinger
    2. Big Star
    3. Elvis Costello and the Attractions
    4. the Paul Collins Beat
    5. The Muffs

A Little Music History for you:
Technically "power pop" is branch of Rock that stems originally from The Beatles. While the Beatles aren't considered a power pop act, the bands they've influenced create the basis for the genre. While Badfinger (produced by the Beatles), Big Star (and Eric Carmen's solo work) and the Bay City Rollers took the powerpop genre to where it came to be called "bubblegum" , along came the most influential Power Pop band ever Cheap Trick. CT was one of the first bands to dip into the newly developing scene known as punk or new wave and harness that energy(although modern punker enthusiasts would poop on that idea...probably because of their massive 70's success...or maybe because Robin Zander was/is just so pretty).

The late 70's and the further popular growth of underground rock sound brought on acts such as The Nerves, The Plimsouls, The Paul Collins Beat, . The invention of MTV helped some New Wave Powerpop(tommy tutone, eddy money, Greg Kihn, The Romantics) acts but the massive growth of Heavy Metal pushed the power pop genre back into the underground. While the rest of the 80's underground became dominated by college radio acts such as the cure, REM, and the like, The Smithereens were able, with their crafty songwriting, to bring strong elements of traditional power pop back to the headlines.

The 90's and the popularty of punks acts like Nirvana created a resurgence to guitar based, non metal rock. As this became the grunge era, it also gave rise to west coast bands who grew up with the likes of the LA new wave bands like the plimsouls and their types. Bands such as The Muffs took that big guitar sound and chord progressions of their youth and got alot of mileage during the mid 90's which was followed by Weezers first album. With the consolidation of the record industry in the late 90's. Many of these acts found themselves lost in the shuffle of the emergence of Green Day, Blink 182 and the parade of knockoffs that continues to this day. Some of the above listed bands like The Muffs and even Cheap Trickcontinue to record without national fanfare, releasing music on Idie labels and staying regional instead of knocking themselves out touring for a modest following.

I find some postings here interesting as there is confusion about the defintion of Power Pop. Power Pop is not Powerful pop, just as garage rock is not bands that play in their garage. The Police aren't considered a power pop band. Neither is Cream. Nor the Foo Fighters. The Smithers and the Romantics...absolutely great listings. You can hear more power pop acts that you've never heard on rhino comps such as "The Children Of Nuggets" and the "DIY-power pop".
