  • Bugs Bunny is the Alpha and the Omega of cartoon characters. no one even comes close to Bugs. i had other favorites through the years, but they all proved to be fickle flirtations. only Bugs continues to delight and amuse me as much now as he ever did.

i suspect in the future i'll say that The Simpsons and South Park and Spaceman Zim and Aquateen Hunger Force and a handful of the other really insane creative shows that are on now will be remembered fondly as Classics, but none will have the moxie that ol' Bugs has always been capable of. and few if any of the cartoon characters will look as good in a dress.

george of the jungle, captain canine, the diaperman thing and inspector gadget were favorites when i was younger...

      1. "Gertie the Dinosaur". It was cute and yet animated with incredible finesse by Winsor McKay(sp?). And it was the very first cartoon!

      2. "Popeye the Sailor Man". The original Fleischer Brothers ones...just because they were so bizarre.

      3. "Captain America". Ah, that minimal animation! And the theme song was great, too.

      4. "Norman Normal". Very odd, one-off animated short from Warner Brothers, circa the mid-to-late sixties(Nick At Nite ran it sometimes, back when they used to show old Warner cartoons).

      5. "Battle of the Planets". My favorite Japanese cartoon. The six-year-old me was reeling when they revealed the true identity of Zoltar, the villain!
