Top 5 Drug Movies

1.) Trainspotting - C'mon! This one has it all. Humor, pathos, sex, alcoholism, violence, the DTs, and even projectile diarrhea!

2.) Requiem for a Dream - A very powerful & emotionally disturbing movie with tragic endings for all of its four main characters

3.) Jesus' Son - More low-key than the first two but still pretty good. Billy Crudup's character is aptly-named & memorably pathetic.

4.) Cheech & Chong's Up in Smoke - A pothead classic; great, silly fun

5.) Blow - Very entertaining. I wanted to be the Johnny Depp character.

      1) Drug Store Cowboy
      2) Trainspotting
      3) Blow
      4) Reefer Madness
      5) Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

I wanted to list Requiem for a Dream, I really and truly did, but as much as I loved many things about the movie, there were too many things I hated and/or that had my eyes rolling

The whole neglecting the guy in prison til his arm rots off thing, combined with ALL characters, including the mother for crying out loud, winding up totally fucked. It was just too much, even if it IS what might actually transpire in real life, well, it doesn't ring true in a movie

it was like "oh come the fuck on already, not this TOO!" It was too much... trite and cliched... just so unlikely to have all those events happen, and in such a short time too...

Fact is, having the mother get hooked on drugs too was a bit heavy-handed to begin with... understatement is best in movies with as heavy and florid a topic as drugs

I've known lots and lots of drug addicts... lots... and yeah, some of them are dead now because of it... i don't know anyone who is merely a user and not a dealer who's wound up in jail... though i know it must happen... and not one person black or white who was allowed to sit there with a serious injury unattended nor anyone who ended up doing a sex show for rich weirdos

and hey, i live in a crack 'hood, for crying out loud LOL

and many of the addicts i've known have actually recovered

do any of these things happen? i'm sure they do, but way too much for one movie and one very small group of druggies to encounter in such a short time... it's like he took every possible cliche and put it into one movie... why don't you just hit me over the head with a hammer next time instead?

by the time the end of the movie came i was more pissed off at being so preached to, and unable to suspend my disbelief any longer... that stuck with me much more than the things about the movie that were very amazing...

nice! Dazed and Confused.... forgot about that one....

it's interesting to see how people classify movies.....

I love Boogie Nights and Dazed and Confused, but never thought about them as being drug movies..... though it makes sense on many levels

              1. "Naked Lunch"

              2. "Drugstore Cowboy"

              3. "Marihuana: The Weed With Roots In Hell"(roughly contemporary with "Reefer Madness"...and yep, they actually spelled "marihuana" like that!)

              4. "Burroughs: The Movie"(I'm giving Burroughs three entries here because he was the king! This is an all-around great documentary, and there are interesting/funny/sad stories about addiction not only from the "Naked Lunch" author, but from his son Billy and Herbert Huncke as well.)

              5. "Dazed and Confused"

                I can't believe I forgot "Naked Lunch"

I'm going to replace "Fear and Loathing" with that one! ;-)

"Naked Lunch" was surprisingly good; I didn't think anybody could even begin to capture the atmosphere of that book, but David Cronenberg certainly did!

David Cronenberg can do just about anything, in my opinion.

There's something about his films; he's a unique talent and they all have a certain atmosphere!

I loved "Crash" , and "Existenz" and the one from years back, with Jeremy Irons... the name escapes me at the moment... Evil twin gynecologists who used rather special instruments on some of their patients....

and you are right about the atmospherics....

they all seem to have this dark look, in addtion to the dark emotional and intellectual and sexual tone

but esp in his later films... every thing just looks so dark... lots of night scenes, but even the supposedly well-lit scenes look dark and dark...

"Existenz" appeared to me to literally have a sepia-tone wash over the entire film. *laughs*

I need to see this :) I've missed a lot of his more recent films, but I used to rent the older ones all the time--"Rabid", "Scanners", "They Came from Within".

Requiem for a Dream although I agree with one of the other posters here in that they overdid a lot of it.
