Wed, September 7, 2005 - 10:34 AMOk, the Broadway cast album? With Ben Vereen? -
-
Re: Top 5 Guilty Pleasures
Wed, September 7, 2005 - 10:47 AMum, no..... wow! where'd you hear that? far far far from Ben Vereen
he's a bit too life - loving and cheerful for JC Superstar!
Plus he's mainly a dancer, and its not primarily a dance piece
the main two cast members of the original are Ian Gillian of Deep Purple as Jesus (as opposed to Ted Neely in the film, who looks the part, but is more of a screetchy loud yeller-talker than a singer.. Gillian is a far superior vocalist)
Murray Head as Judas (can't remember the guy who played the role in the movie, but he was just as good)
The main reason I prefer the Broadway cast version is the music is just plain more rockin'... I don't like Ted Neely's version of Jesus either, but mostly it's the wimpy arrangements and music I don't like.
oh, Yvonne Elliman plays Mary M in both, but she's my least favorite character and has the weakest songs... I usually skip her version of "I don't know how to love him" so that I don't vomit..
but Judas singing it, towards the end, is one of my faves... more powerful and meaningful.. a man singing about another man who has a powerful hold on him in a spiritual and mental, and even emotional way that it totally non-sexual
actually, he has the best role/songs in the show.
For ease of distinction, the Broadway version has a dark brown cover. -

Re: Top 5 Guilty Pleasures
Wed, September 7, 2005 - 11:11 AM*correction, via kelly:
apparently, there is a THIRD version of this with a white cover and the one I like is actually the original London cast version
anyway, that's the one to buy and to beat in my opinion
from listing guilty players to deconstructing JC Superstar!
lol maybe its not such a guilty pleasure after all... i don't personally know anyone who does not like this album! -
-
Re: Top 5 Guilty Pleasures
Wed, September 7, 2005 - 11:45 AMI do have a real soft spot for the movie, too. It doesn't have the thundering power of the London verrsions, but there's a sort of snakeyness I like about it. -

Re: Top 5 Guilty Pleasures
Mon, September 19, 2005 - 9:39 PMSpeaking of, here's a piece on what is most everyone that I know's most secret Guilty Pleasure (after they admit that "Jive Talkin'" is pretty great, of course), Country Truckin' Music.
It's a thing I wrote for a short lived local 'zine in San Francisco called "Ventilator" and it features the Alabama Wild Man quite prominently.
rubberduck.tribe.net/thread/...d0e72d0a
Sure it's self-promotoion, but I only moderate 3 tribes and this is the only one I created when I wasn't drunk.
