5 most overrated bands/artists

topic posted Wed, May 19, 2004 - 5:21 AM by  Unsubscribed
I was driving in to work today today and heard an old song by Nirvana when it hit me on this particular topic... who do you feel are the five MOST overrated bands or artists? lol. I'm sure this will cause some serious debate...

Mine...
1)Grateful Dead... yeah.. never done acid, so the only conclusion I can come up with is these guys really sucked!
2)Nirvana: Smells like teen garbage....
3)Smashing Pumpkins: Nice voice, if you're a girl.
4)Anyone with the last name Jackson: Yes, they had their day.. but seriously how long has it been since either of them had a bona fide hit album?
5)hmmm... writer's block... I'll wait to see what some of you come up with and maybe it'll ring a bell for me!

This is a tough topic beacause your typical person will mistake this topic for bands he/she doesn't like. Bands that after one listening don't sound good, so throw in the towel. In other words, if it isn't in his/her record collection, the band is overrated.

I look at this topic from a more openminded view. The way I see it, even if I dislike the band or artist, if they made a significant impact on music, then they are not overrated.

I see that the Grateful Dead was listed by a couple of you. And as always, the same cliche drug references popped up. Sure the Dead did use drugs and hippies followed them blah blah blah. But what they did for music and the music community was something like no other. They created a sound, style, and a following that is truly theirs. This was all done with no help from MTV and little radio play. The countless jamband acts of today are only here b/c of the Dead. The millions of people that would follow them across the US for 30+ years proves to me that they were only overrated in the eyes of mainstream America- an audience the Dead didn't focus on.

Nirvana is another one. I've heard all the anti Nirvana arguments. "They only play 3 chords, Kurt can't sing, Kurt can't solo, Pearl Jam is more talented, blah blah blah". The point of the matter is that no other band of the 1990's shaped music as Nirvana PERIOD. Like them or hate them, they conquered music with a force that blew every band around away. Simplistic as they were, the lyrics and melodies will influnence listeners for a long time. To this day, Nirvana is STILL the most popular band from the Pacific Northwest in the last 25 years.

And I have no idea why Zeppelin was listed...now that is just stupid!!

      Ok here are mine...

1.)KISS...more of a spectacle then a band. They left an impact on stage shows and stage presence, but not on music. Try to name 5 songs (does not apply to KISS Army members).

2.)Pearl Jam...oooohh I bet this strikes a nerve with you. Look, I like these guys, but besides for the first 2 possibly 3 albums, they have done nothing for music. They are a good band, but will always be in the shadow of Nirvana in terms of the early 1990's. Serioulsy, what have they done to leave an imapact on shaping the sound of music in the last 10 years?

3.) U2...ok another one that many of you will contest. War and Joshua Tree are classics, but what else is? These guys have to have the best marketing scheme ever, b/c something is up on why people feel these guys are legendary. Every 2 or 3 years these guys come up with some catchy jingle that 30 year old women fall in love with and $100 seats get eaten up like chicken at a whitetrash buffet. If they would have hung it up 10-15 years ago, then they would be a legendary band.

4.) Yardbirds...yes I know all of the guitar talent that came through this band. But can your typical person name 3 songs by them or the name of an album. This band lives off of the fame of who was in it rather than what was accomplished. If Clapton, Page ,or Beck would have never ammounted to anything, this band would never have been heard of.

5.) LL Cool J...this guy amazes me. People act like he is this almighty poet on the mic, but what impact has he left to rap? Back in the day, he has an album named Radio, which was solid. Since it's release in 1985, he has only made sell out songs for people who know nothing about music. His popularity comes from his body, lips, and MTVfriendly melodies.

      Should I go on....lol

Shit. Just read any issue of Spin from the last year or two and you'll get a shitload of overrated bands.

1)The White Stripes. Wow, no one knows if their siblings or lovers or both, but they can sure figure out where the distortion pedals are at the guitar shop!

        2) The Strokes. New York garage rock was cool once. Now it just feels fucking old.

        3) Hanson. I cannot believe these teenybopper fuckwits are actually trying to market themselves as indie rock. Not that Pavement is the second coming of the Beatles or anything, but at least they didn't start as corporate boyband shit and then use the money they made to start their own label. They still can't write a decent song or come up with an interesting melody.

        4) Phish. Sure, the Dead started that whole idea, and yes, jam bands can be cool. But for fuck's sake people. Really. You don't need to be just like the boomers and follow around another jam band rather than doing your own thing.

        5) Blink-182. "I'm 28 and a multimillionaire, but that doesn't mean I can't still whine about my shitty parents and the girl that wouldn't go with me to prom. Wah. Wah." Rinse and repeat.

    1. U2 has consistently sucked since about 1990
    2. Elton John since the early '80s
    3. Phil Collins
    4. Celine Dion
    5. Although I can appreciate how the Grateful Dead caused a movement, I don't get the Phish phenomenon

yeah the Beatles, Zep, and Nirvana are anything but overrated.

Like I said, to determine if a band is overrated, you have to see what they did to impact music. And I am pretty damn sure all 3 of these acts made SERIOUS impacts on music.

As for the Phish phenominon many of you speak of...hmmmm...well I would have to say more lucky than overrated. These guys are all killer musicians.Trey's guitar work can easily stand up against most players out there, not to mention the rest of the band. But there's no denial that when Jerry died, Phish took over a whole fan base. 1993-95 was when the jamband scene got huge. These guys would have eventually broke into the mainstream sooner or later, but they were in the right place at the right time in music history. Now 10 years later, they are easily old news.

While I have the floor I would like to add another band who gets too much credit.

        Tool

Ok Ok..I know these guys were God's gift to the 1990's underground pretentious metal scene. I know it was a breath of fresh air to a worn out metal scene. I know I know I know- many of my friends in college would place these guys on the highest of music alters. Undertow was a unique album. Aenima shows signs of brilliance. BUT not much going on lately. AND what lasting impact have they really made on music? What bands have spawned from Tool that have made an impact on music? They are a band that you either love or know hardly anything about. Either way, they really haven't earned the place in music history that the die hard Tool fans proclaim.

How come nobody has mentioned Guns N Roses? They were never, ever worth the world-changing hype they received. I liked them when Appetite for Destruction came out, but soon grew to resent them because of how overly huge they got on a clearly mediocre formula.

Aerosmith was great before Draw the Line. Then it's been schlock. Of course, I never, ever want to hear Dream On again.

Agree with all the jam band bashers. Take 'em all.

I like U2 still. I would continue to look forward to more from them, but I would happily offer up REM in their place. REM had their time as groundbreakers, but they are long since past.

Personally, I've never gotten the Dylan or Neil Young things. I know both are hailed as some of the most influential songwriters of the last 40 years, but I don't miss listening to them ever. Can't be bothered.

I'm with you on Neil Young. I just can't stand his voice! Too nasal-y, and his lyrics leave something to be desired. At least recent Young, forgive me if his older stuff was better, but I haven't really been exposed to that era of his music.

WOW, I cannot believe what you people are saying!!! Man, there was a time when people had an understanding and appreciation of music in this tribe, but I guess that is no more. Where did you all come from?

AS I satated in the intial post, you people are mistaking overrated for personal dislike. Just b/c you hate the Beatles, doesn't mean they are overrated. Just step back and look at the big picture for a moment instead of being caught up in the crap that many of you listen to.

And how in the hell is Dylan and Guns n Roses overrated? Man you people are VERY disappointing. I would love to know your favorite bands.

How does the sound of someone's voice make him overrated? Let's start replying with more educated responses in this post.

                  THANK YOU

                    "mistaking overrated for personal dislike"

If you think they/ a band are/is overrated, are you still listening to them, or do you have a personal dislike for them?

"Just because you hate _____, doesnt mean they are overrated."

To me, if I hate their music(not them), but millions of others do, then to me they are overrated.

"Lets start replying with more educated responses in this post."

Translation - Im not hearing what I want to hear, so your wrong.

"Overrating" is personal opinion, and there is no such thing as a wrong opinion, just a different one. There can never be a positive identification of what is overrated, because it is all suggestive.

P.S.- I really like your work, especially pics 8 and 15

Look, I am not trying to sound like the almighty god of music over here. Obvioulsy we all have different opinions and tastes with music ,and that is fine. But come on, the Beatles. I would bet my faith that The Beatles have impacted and inspired 90% of American musicians since the 60's. The same goes for other bands that were listed on some of the posts. I understand that there is no criteria for evaluating such a subjective topic, but the point I was trying to make was that even if you don't listen to a particualar band, there should still be a sense of recognition if they deserve it. And if with educated responses, I meant giving better backing reasons for a choice. That's all.

Oh...and thanks for the compliments DJ

After starting the post I've been relatively quiet I know, and while I don't agree with the Beatles being listed, I would say that the whole point of the topic is, who is the most overrated in your opinion. In other words, whose fame, popularity and influence do you believe is grossly out of whack with their talent level. It's personal opinion. I'm glad you have deep convictions in the music space and certainly respect you for them, but that doesn't mean you have the right to belittle anyone else for their opinions.

Again, who the fuck do you think you are, piss boy? People offered up comments in the spirit of this thread, and you think you can jump down their shit with impunity? Disagree if you wish, but don't EVER pull this kinda pissy shit again, diaper puddle. Educate your own dim ass first, before you attempt to condescend to others. Nobody's comments here are any less valid than yours, punk.

I don't care for the Beatles much myself, but when pressed, I'd have to admit that were wrote some of the greatest pop songs ever written. I think it's their mostly upbeat attitude & outlook that sounds dated to me & gets on my nerves...

I also think Nirvana (and Cobain in particular) were much overrated, but they were still very good & Kurt was a thoughtful songwriter.

I still love the Pixies though! I guess I can see however, how Frank Black's screaming & the out-of-tune guitar melodies can bother people...

Well...as I said from the get go....

THIS HAS 100% NOTHING TO DO with personal taste.

I just find it really hard to say that the Beatles, Dylan, etc are overrated. I understand the cheese factor from the Beatles and Dylan's voice is one you either hate or love....BUT neither of these characteristics has NOTHING to do with being overrated.

Maybe we all have different views of overrated. I personally use this outlook:
A band gets popular for one album, song, etc and does nothing else in their career but live off of past success. This band does little or nothing to influence the future of music.
          See KISS for reference.

Oh, I think all the bands/artists I listed have merit, but my definition of overrated extends to people who were good but have been deified. I believe that Bob Dylan, Simon and Garfunkel, the Stones, and the Velvet Underground produced work that was every bit as crucial--if not more so--than the Beatles, and certainly work that had a wider emotional range. But none of them, not even Dylan, has been enshrined the way that the Beatles were.
I also like Robert Johnson, but I think that many of his hardcore fans tend to fetishize him and ignore every important country blues artist who preceded him. He was a great synthesizer of Delta blues styles, that's for sure(kind of like Blind Boy Fuller was a synthesizer of Piedmont blues styles), and for whatever reason has come to embody the blues for a lot of people. Better Robert Johnson than B.B. King, I guess ;) But his sound can easily be traced back to Charley Patton, Son House, and Skip James...and even the crossroads myth was borrowed from Tommy Johnson(no relation).
